Cloudy skies leave dappled shadows over the verdant slopes, deep depressions, and circular cones of Chyulu Hills National Park. This volcanic mountain range extends for some 100km; covered by the thicket, vast grassland, and lush montane forest. It offers magnificent views of the continent’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Large mammals such as elephant and rhino roam across the plains while leopards conceal themselves in trees. Beneath its surface, the hills are dotted by the Kisula Caves and extensive underground reservoirs.
Tree along the park’s varying terrain or horse-ride through its hills and you may catch glimpses of loping giraffe, buffalo, lion, and wildebeest among others. Keep your binoculars at hand – Chyulu Hills is home to an array of birdlife including the Martial and crowned eagle as well as the white-starred robin. The Leviathan Caves, whose staircase entrance can be accessed after an energetic hike or 4X4, extend for some 11km and is known to be one of the longest lava tubes in the world.
This year-round destination is a 3.5hr drive from Nairobi. The park is also home to two airstrips which service light aircraft. The Chyulu Hills separate the prolific wildlife sanctuaries of Tsavo National Park and Amboseli National Park, making these two destinations easy add-ons to an itinerary in this area.
