Addo Elephant National Park may have originated around its dense elephant population, but the park offers much more than just these gentle giants. Across its 180,000ha, which stretches down from the semi-arid Karoo, over the Zuurberg Mountains to the coast between the mouths of the Sundays and Bushman’s River, Addo is the only national park in the world to conserve the Big 7—the Big 5 plus the southern right whale and the great white shark—in their natural habitat.
On top of traditional safaris, visitors can traverse the stunning landscape by horseback or guided hikes through the bush, to observe the 600 elephants and plethora of lion, buffalo, black rhino, leopard, and other animals in the park. Apart from allowing visitors to view the wonderful array of wildlife up close, the guided walks are a great way to learn about the park’s diverse flora.
Many of the roads are tarred and the rest are of a good gravel standard, making it easy to navigate through the park. The more adventurous can take to the 4x4 route that snakes its way through the beautiful landscape. The park has the noble goal of conserving the diverse flora and fauna that it houses so that future generations can revel in its beauty.
