The malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa’s Waterberg region is a vast wildlife sanctuary with very little in the way of exclusive commercial or private safari lodges. All lodges are hidden from view to form their own private sanctuary, including the luxury five-star Mhondoro Lodge. Afro-chic and contemporary elements characterise this comfortable retreat with resplendent views over a busy waterhole.
Connected to the lodge via a 60-metre tunnel is an underground waterhole hide which lets guests relish eye-to-eye encounters with the wildlife in a safe environment. Game drives take guests through the diverse habitat of the reserve in search of the abundant wildlife, including the Big 5, with evening game drives ending in sundowners atop a mountain ridge.
The lodge is family-friendly yet tranquil and private, with only Deluxe Suites, a Family Suite, an Executive Suite and a Villa on offer. A deluxe wellness facility complements the comfortable and quiet atmosphere of the lodge, while a star bed, safely hidden in an elevated construction, is a chance to truly behold the splendour of the night sky and relish in the sounds of nature.
