Grootbos Nature Reserve is home to 3,500 ha of hills and valleys covered in fynbos and shady patches of towering milkwood forests offering distant glimpses of the ocean. The reserve is also home to the five-star Grootbos Garden Lodge. One of the crowning glories of the Cape Floral Kingdom, this reserve is a perfect stopover while enjoying some of the Cape’s best-loved attractions.
Spend your morning on a 4x4 botanical safari or enjoy land-based whale watching tour before breaking for a tantalising food and wine pairing. Nature walks abound and go hand-in-hand with cave and bird-watching tours. Get into better rhythm with nature as you traverse this landscape in a very natural way. With stables located on the reserve, you can see Grootbos as either a beginner or expert rider, as you trot slowly through the fynbos or ride on the beach. Take a Big 5 Marine Tour to Dyer Island – spotting dolphins, penguins, seals and more – or brave the waters offshore while shark-cage diving with great whites.
The Garden Lodge aptly reflects the surrounding earth while still embracing a sleek contemporary design. Ceiling beams illustrate the branches of the hallowed ancient milkwood trees while splashes of colour (influenced by kaleidoscopic fynbos) compliment the exquisite woodwork and modern architecture. Housed in the main area you will find a large lounge, restaurant, spa, heated pool, terrace, outdoor play area and a children’s entertainment room. Pathways surrounded by a remarkable indegenous garden lead toward spacious suites. Each suite offers an elegant and modern aesthetic, while the lush surroundings give families and couples a perfect retreat to connect with nature and each other.
