Camdeboo, an ancient Khoisan word meaning “place of green hills or pools”, rolls pleasantly off the tongue with that special intensity of something new and strange. It captures the tranquillity of the 14,000ha Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve situated in South Africa’s Great Karoo and the homely and hospitable five-star accommodation provided at Camdeboo Manor.
With its fauna and flora making up four different biomes there is much on offer. Spot the “Camdeboo Big 5” consisting of a breeding cheetah pair, white rhino, giraffe and near-extinct mountain zebra. Twice-daily game drives and bush walks will ensure quality experiences while a project walk touring the park’s breeding projects and a visit to the Anglo Boer War site of the ‘Battle of Paardfontein’ add extra interest.
The manor’s four Suites are housed in three Cape Dutch houses and offer exclusivity and comfort with direct garden access from private patios. The Honeymoon Suite is secluded in the gardens in what was originally the Gate House. Wholesome cooking is inspired by recipes of early settlers and enjoyed in several venues—from under the stars to the dining room by the fire.
