Steeped in history, Amakhala Game Reserve was once inhabited by Frontier settlers who arrived in the area in the early 19th century. Today it plays host to the Big 5 and the five-star Amakhala Bush Lodge – whose prime positioning overlooking a waterhole promises superb wildlife-viewing opportunities paired with excellent service.
Spanning across 7,500ha of Eastern Cape terrain in the greater Addo area, Amakhala Game Reserve is a convenient safari destination under an hour from Port Elizabeth’s national airport. Aside from the Big 5, Amakhala is also home to cheetah, giraffe, zebra and black wildebeest, among others. Formed with a purpose not only to conserve wildlife but also to aid local communities, the Amakhala Foundation and Craft Centre can be found nearby.
Each of the lodge’s Tented and Thatched Suites have their own viewing deck and plunge pool, while the interior and en-suite bathroom boasts a fireplace, oval bath, al fresco double showers and air-conditioning. Guests can enjoy twice-daily game drives or venture out of the reserve to play golf at Bushman Sands.
