How Do I Choose Between Rwanda Safari Packages?

It all depends on what you want from your trip. If you’re primarily interested in gorilla trekking, for example, you’ll need to ensure you visit at the right time of the year, which is during the dry seasons, from June to September and mid-December to early February.

We recommend you plan your trip with a trusted tour operator to ensure logistics run smoothly and you experience the best the country offers. At Rhino Africa, we’re proud to be the World’s Most-Awarded Safari Company and our Travel Experts have been to Rwanda multiple times. So you can trust that we know best!

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Rwanda?

Costs range from $350 to $3,500 per person per night, depending on seasonality, accommodation, and activities.

How Much Does it Cost to See Gorillas in Rwanda?

To go gorilla trekking in Rwanda, you need a permit. It will cost around $1,500 per person, and all these proceeds go towards safeguarding these endangered mountain gorillas.

Please note that only a limited number of permits are allowed at a time, with strict rules around how many people are allowed around a gorilla family at a time. This activity also has age restrictions, with children having to be 15 years and older. You’re also expected to have a reasonable fitness level, as the high humidity and inclines can make it a strenuous activity at times.

Where in Rwanda Should I Go?

There are many places to add to your viewing list in Rwanda. Here are some of our favourites.

  • Volcanoes National Park: The best place to go gorilla trekking, you can also learn more about Dian Fossey, bird-watching, and more
  • Nyungwe Forest National Park: An excellent place to go chimpanzee trekking
  • Kigali: The country’s capital is known for being very clean, friendly and rich in culture
  • Akagera National Park: Africa’s largest protected wetland, it’s a Big 5 safari destination
  • Lake Kivu: Explore the predator-free waters for a relaxing lakeside holiday

Which Destinations Can I Add to My Rwanda Tour?

Since you’re coming to East Africa, we highly recommend combining your trip to Rwanda with a safari in Tanzania or Kenya. We also love combining bush and beach by extending your holiday in Africa with a beach holiday in Zanzibar
Our Travel Experts will recommend the best places to visit based on your interests as well as on what makes sense logistically.

When is The Best Time to Visit Rwanda?

If you’re visiting Rwanda to go gorilla trekking, the best time is during the long dry season between June and September or the short dry season from mid-December to early February

However, Rwanda is considered a year-round destination if you’re visiting for other reasons, with each season bringing its own charms.

How Many Days Are Ideal for a Rwanda Safari?

The duration of your stay will depend on what you wish to do while in Rwanda. Our Travel Experts can also help recommend the ideal destinations and how long to stay in each one when you book your trip with us.

However, as a guideline, we recommend spending a minimum of three nights in Volcanoes National Park and three more nights in Akagera National Park.

For an authentic East African safari, it’s a great idea to combine your Rwanda gorilla trekking adventure with a Tanzania safari. From Rwanda’s capital, Kigali,  you can fly straight to Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti National Park, where you can spend a couple of nights before continuing to Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire National Park. These direct flights with Auric Air run every day.

How Long Do You Get to Spend Time with Gorillas When Gorilla Trekking?

You’re only allowed to spend one hour with a gorilla family to avoid disturbing them too much.

The duration of your trekking adventure depends on your chosen service provider and fitness level, and you’ll be grouped accordingly. It will also depend on how long it takes to find the gorillas. You can expect to be out trekking for anything from one to three hours, sometimes longer.
