Morukuru Beach Lodge is the newest member of the Morukuru family, located above the sun-bleached dunes of the De Hoop Reserve. Boasting unspoilt views of the Indian Ocean coastline, right on the end of the Cape’s illustrious ‘Whale Trail’, the lodge’s prime location affords some of the best shore-based whale watching in the world – including from the bedrooms, the restaurant and the bar.
Morukuru is run safari-style: staff members connect closely with guests and activities are included. Lodge managers choose what to do each day according to season, weather and guests. Go for a game drive, low-tide walk, mountain biking trips, land-based whale watching or sand-boarding. There is even the chance to snorkel in protected rock pools.
The five immense and beautiful rooms (four face the ocean, and one boasts mesmerising dune views) were designed by Dutch interior designer Janine Butter, who created chic, serene spaces that complement the surrounding landscape. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open up to an unparalleled 51-kilometre stretch of beach and ocean vistas. Each room also has its own wood-burning stove stoked up each evening in winter. And the bathrooms are larger than many hotel rooms, with unpolished light grey granite floors, open showers, and a free-standing bath.
