Lying just on the outskirts of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, the bustling town of Livingstone is your gateway to Zambia’s share of the ever-popular Victoria Falls. Because of its proximity to this UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, it’s no wonder this little settlement is the most-visited tourist destination in the country.
Dotted with elegant Edwardian architecture, Livingstone bears the history of Africa’s colonial past. Named after the British missionary David Livingstone, the first European to explore the area, the town is far more than just a base from which to dive into Victoria Falls’ adrenaline-pumping activities; Livingstone is heavy with a history that will transport you back to a time of explorers, adventure and unspoiled Africa.
The town can be accessed from Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport, which lies about 10-minutes’ drive from the town centre. The airport is well-served by flights from Lusaka, Harare, Addis Ababa, and O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg. Many people who want a more affordable flight to the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls often fly to Livingstone and then cross the border into neighbouring Victoria Falls town.
