In Africa, timing is everything. Although it offers something for everyone year-round, your experience will be different depending on when you visit. There are also certain seasonal highlights you might not want to miss, like when Victoria Falls is in full flood, or to see the Great Wildebeest Migration in action. Here’s the ultimate calendar of what to expect throughout the year when visiting Africa’s many destinations.
Although Africa is great year-round, you can expect ever-changing landscapes, attractions and experiences every month. However, while there are times that are considered the “best” for each destination, you should also note that certain seasons offer better availability and rates.
Of course, the best time to visit Africa depends not only on the seasons but also on your individual tastes and interests. For instance, you might prefer cooler temperatures and log fires to a hot summer’s day lounging on the beach. Or, you might be more interested in bird watching than seeing the Big 5.

South Africa:
January is in the heart of the country's summer, so be prepared for warm African weather. In Cape Town, the summer days offer great weather and long days, perfect for activities and soaking up the sun. From the idyllic beaches like Clifton and Camps Bay to scenic coastal drives, summer in Cape Town is perfect for active guests.
If you're planning to go on a safari in Kruger National Park, you can look forward to seeing lush landscapes, and it’s also the ideal bird-watching season.
Botswana:
During January, Botswana is hot. The Okavango Delta and Chobe region offer spectacular wildlife and birdlife sightings, and you enjoy easier access to attractions as it's generally a quieter month.
Tanzania:
When visiting in January, you can expect fewer travellers and enjoy lower rates. A large part of the Great Wildebeest Migration occurs in Tanzania, and during January and February, it's the wildebeest calving season, promising adorable sightings and enthralling encounters with predators following the herds. Our Travel Experts consider January a perfect time to combine a Tanzania safari and a Zanzibar beach getaway.
Gorilla Trekking:
There are two dry seasons, ideal for gorilla trekking, with January to February being the shorter of the two. Visiting during this time is best for easier access. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is one of the best places for this thrilling adventure.
South Africa:
Summer temperatures usually peak in February, especially in the Cape Winelands and Cape Town. Luckily, the ocean's waters will cool you down. This is also a great time to explore the Garden Route. In the Kruger National Park, it’s still prime time for birders and photographers to immerse themselves in nature’s wonders.
Botswana:
Botswana is brimming with birdlife in February, particularly in the Okavango Delta and Chobe region. Because it's the low-water season, there are fewer travellers.
Tanzania:
January is a quieter time for Tanzania, so you can expect fewer travellers and lower rates while the lush savannah is still beautiful. This is also the best time to hop over to Zanzibar for a bush-and-beach holiday.
Victoria Falls:
The water levels start to rise as this is the beginning of the high-water season. Therefore, February is a great time to visit for river cruises and to spot wildlife on the banks.
Gorilla Trekking:
As the shorter dry season comes to an end, you can still go gorilla trekking in February before the slippery rainy season starts.
South Africa:
If you're thinking about going to Kruger National Park in March, we'd say you should absolutely go! During the wet summer, you'll find yourself ooh-ing and aah-ing over the newborn wildlife. It's also the ideal time for birders to spot the many species flitting about the skies.
March in Cape Town and the Winelands brings long, sun-drenched days perfect for wine tasting and lazy outdoor lunches, while Boulders Beach beckons with calm False Bay waters, penguins on the shore, and the chance to swim or snorkel.
Botswana:
If you are an avid birder, it’s a great idea to combine your Kruger National Park safari with Botswana during this time. It's not a busy season in Botswana, so you can enjoy easier access for bird-watching in Chobe and the Okavango Delta.
Tanzania:
Just like Kruger National Park in March is all about seeing newborn wildlife, you can also expect wildebeest calves in Tanzania in this month. You'll enjoy lush open vistas, fewer travellers and lower rates. The temperature is also perfect for exploring the coastline and Zanzibar for the ultimate bush-and-beach escape.
Victoria Falls:
With water levels continuing to rise, you can enjoy boat cruises along the Zambezi River. However, because of the higher water levels, the white water rafting season comes to an end.
South Africa:
The weather is starting to cool down, but it's not yet raining in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands. Therefore, locals and tourists make the most of hiking up Table Mountain and enjoying The Galileo Open Air Cinema screenings across the Cape.
Botswana:
In April, guests enjoy the last bit of the lush scenery, birdlife and tranquillity. Chobe and the Okavango Delta are great year-round destinations to visit – and April is no exception.
Tanzania:
The wildebeest make their way through the country as part of their Great Migration. As it's a journey rather than a single setting, it's important to know when and where to go. And if you book through our Travel Experts, we'll ensure you get a front-row seat.
Victoria Falls:
By April, the Zambezi River is in full flow, and Victoria Falls is at its most dramatic! Our travellers are amazed at this spectacle, especially when seen from a helicopter.
South Africa:
If your main focus is safari, May is one of the best months to visit South Africa. As one of the dry months, the bush is sparse, meaning game viewing will not disappoint in Kruger National Park during this time.
Cape Town gets a bit cooler, so if you're looking for a beach holiday, it’s best to explore the KwaZulu-Natal coastline instead. However, since Cape Town is not as hot, it offers very comfortable travelling weather which then will also combine well with other Southern Africa destinations, making it one of the best months for a full itinerary.
Botswana:
In general, May is a good month to go on safari. Water sources become scarce as Botswana enters its dry season, and wildlife sightings are prominent. At the same time, the Okavango Delta begins to flood. This is just before the busiest season, so you'll enjoy a classic safari experience but with fewer fellow travellers.
Tanzania:
In May, guests enjoy the last of the emerald green season, making it the perfect time for a photo safari! It's still off-season, so you can take advantage of lower rates.
Victoria Falls:
A sight to behold, the water is still running in full force, but with less mist than in the preceding months. May marks the beginning of winter – be sure to pack something warm.
Garden Route:
May is a great time to take a road trip up the Garden Route, as it’s a quieter month without the crowds. The weather is cooler but still pleasant to enjoy outdoor activities.
Mauritius:
You’ll love Mauritius in May if you prefer warm but not hot, drier weather (goodbye, humidity!) and plenty of sunshine. It’s also outside peak season, so you can expect an uncrowded experience.
South Africa:
It's the dry winter season in Kruger National Park, which is ideal for game drives. As rivers dry up, animals congregate around the remaining available water sources, so you'll get to see plenty of species. Days are somewhat warm and sunny, but the nights get much cooler.
June is the rainy season in Cape Town. Some days may be sunny, but with the rain, it can also get quite chilly. However, there are numerous restaurants and wineries with fireplaces and cosy atmospheres.
Botswana:
Botswana gets busier in June, which is during its dry season. In Chobe, animals concentrate around permanent water sources, affording fantastic wildlife sightings.
Tanzania:
June is a relatively dry month and has become a popular time to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, as the animals typically cross the Grumeti River around June. Combining your safari with a beach holiday in Zanzibar is a good idea.
Victoria Falls:
June is a very popular month to visit Victoria Falls. Water levels are starting to drop, but you'll still have spectacular views of the waterfalls. It's getting a bit cooler, so pack warm clothes for early mornings and evenings. You should also take the opportunity to enjoy a sunset river cruise! The start of winter is drier, making it easier to spot wildlife during your game drives. This is also a great time to combine your Victoria Falls holiday with an African safari.
Gorilla Trekking:
The longer dry season, which stretches from June to September, offers ideal conditions for gorilla trekking, making June a great time to go. In addition to primates, you can also spot other wildlife in the national parks.
Namibia:
With more temperate weather during the dry season and clear daytime skies, this is an excellent time to spot wildlife. The landscapes are dry and sparse, making it easier to see a wide range of species. However, evenings can become very chilly, so come prepared.
Mauritius:
Kite surfers, rejoice! This is one of the best months to visit Mauritius, thanks to the trade winds. It’s also a good time if you’re not a fan of humidity and enjoy the beach life without the heat, as the weather cools down quite a bit, especially in the evenings.
South Africa:
July is one of the driest months in Kruger, with wildlife gathering at permanent waterholes where hides offer you incredible viewing opportunities. The dry ground means animal tracks stay visible for longer, making it easier to follow signs of predators and enjoy some close-up encounters.
Cape Town is much cooler and gets its rain during winter, but it still has many wonderful activities to keep you entertained.
Botswana:
The dry season in Botswana peaks in July, making it an excellent time to spot wildlife. The Okavango Delta is flooded, allowing you to spot wildlife from a mokoro (dugout canoe) as you glide along the waterways.
Tanzania:
The Great Wildebeest Migration continues, as the herds cross the Grumeti River and later the Mara River. These river crossings are absolutely spectacular, so make sure you book well in advance! July is also the ideal time to combine your authentic safari experience with a beach holiday in Zanzibar.
Kenya:
With almost no rainfall and temperate weather, paired with excellent safari sights, July is a great time to visit Kenya.
Victoria Falls:
If you want to catch a glimpse of the famous lunar rainbow at Victoria Falls, July is the month to visit! Water levels will slowly continue to recede until the end of the calendar year, but in July, it's still high enough to witness Victoria Falls in all its majesty. During the dry season, it's also easier to spot wildlife in the surrounding national parks. Make the most of Zimbabwe by opting for a safari and Victoria Falls combo tour.
Gorilla Trekking:
July is one of the best months for gorilla trekking as it's still the long dry season. The conditions are less challenging because July is one of the driest months. However, it's the busy season, so be sure to book well in advance to ensure availability.
Namibia:
With sunny days and minimal rainfall, July is one of the best months to visit Namibia. As it’s the dry season, animals gather around waterholes, making it an ideal time for wildlife viewing and photography. However, it’s also peak season and availability is limited, so be sure to book well in advance.
South Africa:
In August, Cape Town still experiences some rainfall, while whale season along the coast is in full swing. Hermanus, only a two-hour drive from Cape Town, offers prime Southern Right whale calf sightings.
The dry season still offers great wildlife viewing in Kruger National Park and the surrounding private concessions.
Botswana:
The Delta waterways and pans are still flooded as the dry season continues. It's a great time to experience Botswana in all its splendour, so it’s best to book as early as possible.
Tanzania:
August remains a peak time to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, as the wildebeest and zebra herds cross the Mara River. Guests from across the globe travel to this region as national parks offer amazing wildlife sightings in the open savannah. Our Travel Experts often combine East African safaris with a beach holiday in Zanzibar in August.
Kenya:
The Great Wildebeest Migration herds cross over into Kenya during August, making it the perfect time for a safari in the Maasai Mara. This month is also ideal for exploring the coastline of this East African country.
Victoria Falls:
If you want to see Victoria Falls in August, be sure to book in advance. This is a very popular time of year for this destination. Temperatures are rising a little bit, and as water levels start to decrease around mid-August, it’s possible to go white water rafting. Depending on water levels, you may also be able to visit Devil's Pool (located on Zambia's side), which is an item high on the bucket list of many. Combining your Victoria Falls tour with a safari experience is also easy.
Gorilla Trekking:
Gorilla trekking in East Africa is a life-changing experience. August falls within the long dry season, making it the ideal time to trek these primates. Keep in mind that permits may be costly (depending on where you go) and limited. We highly recommend booking your gorilla trekking trip well in advance.
South Africa:
September is a great time to be in Cape Town! The West Coast is in full bloom – a stunning, colourful spectacle. The vineyards in the Winelands are green, while canola fields are patches of yellow in the surrounding areas.
Up north in Kruger National Park, September is still a dry month that offers terrific wildlife sightings. It’s also the perfect time to combine Cape Town with your classic safari holiday.
Botswana:
If you've ever wanted to experience an elephant safari, you need to go to Chobe in September! You'll be in awe at these gentle giants. The Okavango Delta remains flooded, presenting a great opportunity to explore the wildlife from a mokoro.
Tanzania:
There are fewer guests visiting Tanzania in September. As the dry season continues, the herds of wildebeest and zebra stay close to the Mara River as they search for grazing pastures. Our Travel Experts often combine Tanzania safaris with beach holidays in Zanzibar during this time.
Kenya:
September is a great month to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in Kenya. By this time, many of the herds have crossed the Mara River into the Maasai Mara. It's still the dry season, so expect hot weather.
Victoria Falls:
In September, the weather at Victoria Falls is great! It's not too hot (yet), and the conditions are fantastic for white water rafting. September is a popular season to visit Victoria Falls, so plan and book in advance. It's still the dry season, meaning you will be able to spot wildlife easily in the surrounding national parks.
Gorilla Trekking:
September marks the tail end of the long dry season, making gorilla trekking a bit more challenging when rains do arrive. Obtaining permits may be easier, but it's still advisable to book your trip well in advance.
South Africa:
In Cape Town, temperatures climb towards the end of October, but you might still get some scattered showers here and there. It can get quite windy some nights, so be sure to pack accordingly.
Combine the warmer days with a classic safari in Kruger National Park and the surrounding private concessions. The summer months are ideal for bird-watching and observing the antics of newborn wildlife.
Botswana:
October is a very hot month in Botswana. Large elephant herds can be seen along the Chobe River, while water levels in the Okavango Delta continue to decline. The water moves to the pans, providing much-needed hydration for vegetation and wildlife.
Tanzania:
October means the end of the dry season, so you'll still have time to spot wildlife as they gather around limited waterholes. The first thunderstorms typically arrive late in October. Our guests often enjoy combining their bush holiday with a beach breakaway in Tanzania.
Kenya:
Many wildebeest are still in the Maasai Mara but will slowly return to Tanzania throughout October. This is also a great time to experience other wildlife in Kenya.
Victoria Falls:
October is the hottest month to visit Victoria Falls, and we would not recommend visiting during this time.
Gorilla Trekking:
Rwanda’s short wet season brings brief (mostly afternoon) thunderstorms, lush green landscapes and soft light that is ideal for photography. Birding is particularly rewarding as migratory species arrive. While rain can make gorilla trekking more challenging, cultural and other nature experiences remain largely unaffected and highly photogenic.
Mauritius:
The driest month of the year, August is also a very popular (read: busy) time to visit Mauritius. So, if you love a good party vibe, this is for you.
South Africa:
Locals and international guests in Cape Town enjoy longer, warmer days and spend more time on the pristine beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton. Wine estates offer exciting wine-tasting experiences and often host a summer concert or two. November marks the end of the whale season, with the last whales still seen splashing along the coast of Hermanus.
Meanwhile, in Kruger National Park, the days and nights are quite warm. As the region gets more rain, there are more water sources, and spotting wildlife through thick vegetation might become a bit more challenging.
Botswana:
As clouds and thunder roll in, migrant birds start to return, and newborn calves are welcomed into the world. Chobe continues to be the elephant capital, perfect for an elephant safari. Meanwhile, the water levels in the Okavango Delta continue to recede, and the region becomes an excellent destination for birding during this time.
Tanzania:
November brings with it periodic afternoon thunderstorms. The Great Wildebeest Migration herds find themselves in the northern part of the country. And as the rain feeds the ground, you'll see how the grasslands change from brown to green. You can also expect fewer travellers and lower rates.
Victoria Falls:
The water levels in November and December are at their lowest. Therefore, it’s not a good time to visit if you want to witness Victoria Falls in all its glory and force. However, because the water levels are so low, it's excellent for white water rafting! Take note that it's still very hot in November. If you're an avid birder, visiting Victoria Falls in November is a must as migratory birds start to arrive.
South Africa:
If you're looking for the ideal beach holiday, come to Cape Town in December! Enjoy long days on the sun-soaked beaches and visit little towns along the coast. It's also a fantastic time to explore the Cape Winelands and enjoy outdoor activities, from hiking to paragliding.
During summer, it's the rainy season in the Kruger National Park. While game and wildlife viewing may become a bit more difficult through the lush, thick vegetation, the summer months are ideal for bird-watching. It’s also a time when impalas are born, resulting in higher predator activity.
Botswana:
Regular thunderstorms announce themselves in December and January, and the country becomes a birder's paradise with plenty of feathery beauties to see.
Tanzania:
With the rain comes migratory birds, so if you enjoy bird-watching, December is a great time to visit Tanzania. During this time, the wildebeest make their way to the southernmost part of the Serengeti to calve. Keep in mind that the festive season is quite busy, so be sure to book your safari well in advance.
Victoria Falls:
December is a birder's paradise at Victoria Falls and a great opportunity to swim in Devil’s Pool. December is still hot, but you can expect thunderstorms almost every day. Keep in mind that, because of the rain, vegetation is greener, so it will be harder to spot wildlife.
Please note that it's important to consider availability when booking your dream trip. To ensure you experience everything your heart is set on, you also need to book in advance.
